Artist Statement - I create my photographic art using a Canon 5D, Canon lenses, and large softbox lighting. I do on-location, outdoor, and studio sessions. I use whatever is available to me, often working indoors with plain walls as my background. I use lighting to make my images pop and to flatter my subjects. I specialize in artistic portraits, and I occasionally photograph nature and still life images.
My best work is in empowering people to be their full authentic self as they’re being photographed, often wearing no makeup and accessing feelings of their potential. My goal is to capture their true essence. I know I’ve done my job when the subject is blown away with the result, and sees themself in a new light, feeling more confident and empowered during the session and in the final product. In a world where we often try to fit in, or are shamed for who we are, I want to show people in their raw form, beautiful and complete and confident exactly as they are.
I'm grateful to have received an artist grant from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
